-The FOMC minutes (Wednesday) predate the recent improvement in data and are therefore likely to echo the more downbeat statement from the August FOMC meeting. However, we do not expect market expectations for QE3 to change on the back of these minutes and therefore believe the overall market impact will be limited.
-What could be important is if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke elaborates on the options he mentioned in his testimony to Congress. But, as we do not expect additional measures in September, the likelihood of something new is small.
-Overall, we expect USD/JPY to trade in a range ahead of Jackson Hole/the next NFP, but with an upward bias given the gradual improvement in US data. Our Japanese economists also expect data to show that Japan's trade deficit widened, providing additional support to USD/JPY.
